A Project to Pass the Time

I don’t think I’ve ever drafted my own pattern. Oh, wait, that’s not true! I created a spindle box for those folks who spin using a drop spindle. I’m actually pretty proud of that one. But recently, I was looking for a small pouch pattern and nothing I was finding was both free and exactly what I was looking for. So I decided to try drafting my own.

Now that I look at it, my measurements still needs some adjustment but it did what I wanted it to and I got the pouches(?) I was looking for.

The main body of the pouch had an outside fabric and a liner piece, sewn with a 1/4″ seam. I left the bottom of the bag open so I could turn the pouch right side out. Once that was done, I top stitched the bottom closed and top stitched an 1/8″ around the top of the bag. The sides didn’t need to be top stitched since the gusset would be sewn in.

My first attempt of the side gusset was too small and needed to be larger. Turns out, it’s now little too big but it worked in the long run. If I make this pattern again, there will be more adjustment.

Sewing in the gusset was a little tricky but I managed it without needed to rip out more than once. I love my ripper. I named him Jack. (Sorry, gallows humor.) Anyway, I sewed the gusset up once side then, adjusting a bit so the pouch could expand, sewed up the other side. I won’t win any awards for perfection but it worked just fine and I after a bit of sewing, I had a nice selection of pouches ready for snaps.

I’m continually frustrated but Joann being gone. Micheals doesn’t have everything I need and, instead of driving to Joann and buying what I need, I’m forced to order it through the mail. Which is fine for the snaps I needed but how in the world do they think you can match thread and zipper colors on a monitor to the fabric you have in your hand. It’s impossible! Micheals has thread now but the selection is very small compared to what Joann had. Gah! So frustrating!

I ended up ordering my snaps (I didn’t have enough black ones and no white ones) from Wawak, which shipped fairly quickly. Once those arrived, the attaching of snaps could begin. I think they turned out fairly well considering I made the whole pattern up on the fly.

Now I have a mess of snapped pouches ready for any necessity.
