Hand embroidery

While I have been doing a fair bit of quilting, my thoughts are never far from “what can I embroider next.” This panel of embroidered circles was finished a while ago but my free time was taken over for a bit with all the mini quilts I’ve been making. It’s time for the embroidery to have its time in the lime light.

This one is one of my favorites. I’ll often get to the end of a project and have favorites. This didn’t need anything more than the disc in the middle and the embroidery around the edges.

This one makes me think of aliens. It’s just a simple of blanket stitch, but switching sides of the circle makes a huge impact. I got the idea from the embroidery class I took taught by Judith Baker Montano at the quilt show in August. Such a simple idea but with a big impact. Brilliant!

I enjoy the “slow stitching” embroidery offers. “Slow stitching” is a phrase I’ve heard associated with quilting more than embroidery. It refers to hand stitching as opposed to machine stitching; hand quilting something instead of machine quilting.

Not sure how I feel about this one. Part of me feels like something is missing and the other part thinks it’s fine the way it is. I designed it rather quickly because I needed something to work on while waiting for something. I like how the roof turned out for the most part. The roof shingles aren’t terribly even but I think I like it that way. Variegated perle cotton adds a lot of interest.

I’m kind of stuck for a new project idea. I’ve done two pieces that are just embroidered circles so I don’t want to do another. I’ve made quite a few embroidered books so no more of those. I’m stuck. Hmm, maybe embroidered circles but without the circles. I’ve got a circle template I can use to draw the circumference and then use only embroidery to describe the circle. I don’t know. I’ll have to think about that one; embroider one and see how it looks. To be continued…
